3 dog breeds responsible for 70 percent of bites

Residents of Illinois may be interested in a new study looking into which dog breeds are responsible for the most bites. The study published by Merritt Clifton found that 70 percent of dog bites came from three dog breeds and their mixes. The dog breeds that have been found to bite the most are Rottweilers, Presa Canarios and Pit Bulls.

Police kill pit bull returning for second attack

A 56-year-old woman and her mini-Doberman pinscher both suffered injuries on June 26 during an attack from a pit bull in a Chicago suburb. This marked the second report in the Chicago area that week in which a pit bull attacked a dog and its owner. Just two days earlier, a Yorkshire terrier was killed and its owner was injured by two pit bulls.

Woman sues Illinois couple for alleged dog bite

A woman has filed a lawsuit against two dog owners, claiming that their dog bit her. The filing was made in Cook County Circuit Court on May 22 and says that the owners violated the Animal Control Act. The woman is seeking compensation for damages incurred.

2 pit bulls attack an Illinois senior citizen and kill her dog

According to recent media reports, an 83-year-old Illinois woman and her small dog were attacked by two dogs believed to be pit bulls. The woman was returning home from a walk when the incident occurred. She suffered a bite to her hand, and her dog was killed.

Cook County suit over dog attack claims

Multiple defendants have been sued in connection with an alleged dog attack in Illinois. The woman bringing the action claims that as she attempted to deliver a package on June 11, 2013, she was bitten while being attacked by a dog owned by the defendants. Her suit was filed with the Cook County Circuit Court on June 12, 2014.

The number of animal bites are on the rise

With the weather warming up in Cook County, many residents are excited to spend their free time outdoors. However, they should be aware that with the nice weather comes an increase in the risk of suffering an animal bite. According to Cedar Rapids Animal Care and Control, located in Iowa, 44 bites from multiple animals in that city were reported in May alone as compared to 26 bites in May 2013.

Official action rare in dog bite cases

Many Illinois residents consider their dog to be a cherished member of the family, but they understand that even well behaved companion animals can sometimes act unpredictably. However, official legal action relating to a dog attack is quite rare, and the state's attorney has only pursued two such cases in the last six years.

State declines to prosecute pit bull owner following attack

On June 2, the Ogle County state's attorney announced that the owner of three pit bulls involved in an incident that occurred in April will not face any criminal charges. A 63-year-old retired teacher was jogging in her Ashton neighborhood when she was attacked by three pit bulls. Her husband happened to be riding by on his bike when he saw the scene and rushed in to rescue his wife.

Pit bull may be euthanized after attacking pedestrian

Many Illinois residents have read news stories in the past about children and adults being attacked by neighborhood dogs. One recent case to make headlines involved a Michigan resident who was attacked by a 3-year-old pit bull while walking home. At around 9:30 a.m. on June 2, the male pedestrian was almost home when a neighbor's pit bull came charging at him. The pit bull had pushed through an unlocked screen door to get outside of the house.
