Drunk driving takes another Chicago resident’s life

Unfortunately, it has become far too common to see news reports in which a Chicago resident has died because of a drunk driver. It has happened once again, this time killing a 55-year-old woman and injuring three other women riding in the car.

According to reports, the motor vehicle accident occurred at about 11:30 p.m. on a Saturday evening. The drunk driver was traveling in an eastbound direction on Michigan Street when he crossed the centerline in a curve and struck the other car head-on. The driver of the other car was killed in the collision. Three female passengers suffered broken bones and head injuries.

A probable cause affidavit indicates that the intoxicated motorist's blood alcohol content, which was tested at St. Catherine Hospital, registered 0.22. This reading is almost three times higher than the legal limit. He is now facing a charge of "causing death while operating a vehicle while intoxicated" as well as three lesser felony charges.

Witnesses report that the man was driving too fast and was almost unable to stop at a traffic sign moments before the motor vehicle accident occurred. According to court records, the drunken driver is currently incarcerated on a $55,000 bond.

While it is fortunate that the driver responsible for this tragic motor vehicle accident is behind bars, the families of the victims have a difficult road ahead of them. They must now decide what steps, if any, they want to take to hold the other driver responsible for his actions. In cases like this, an experienced personal injury attorney can help the bereaved cope as they find a legal remedy for their suffering.
